The First Banner Ads Appear

Back then, Wired magazine had a website called HotWired.

They charged a flat fee of $30,000 to AT&T to place that banner (above) at the top of their site for three months.

That banner ad got an incredible 44% click-through rate!

Nowadays, banner ad click-through rates are closer to 0.06%

It died.

 

By The End Of The 90s Banner Ad Click-Through Rates Were Dwindling

People started to become “blind” to banner ads on websites, and clicks dropped.

This led to innovations where advertisers switched from paying a flat fee, to paying “per impression”, but it still wasn’t enough to deliver the results that banner ads generated at the start.

As banners stopped generating enough revenue, marketers looked for other methods to pay the bills.
 
And using the recently created computer language, javascript, a man called Ethan Zuckerman invented pop-up ads. 
 
If you don’t remember them, pop-up ads worked by automatically “popping up” extra pages or windows when someone visited a website.
 
And while this method generated far more attention than banner ads…
 
They were obnoxious and intrusive.
 
Zuckerman apologized in 2014 for his invention and took huge amounts of flack from the Twitterverse:
Just a few years later, in the early 2000s, most internet browsers had pop-up blocking features.
 
Yet another strategy resigned to the scrap heap.

Google launched their new advertising PPC (pay per click) system in 2002 and 350 advertisers signed up in the first few months.
